Chelsea may field weakened team v Liverpool - Mourinho

Chelsea could field a weakened team in their top of the table Premier League game at Liverpool on Sunday, said manager Jose Mourinho after Tuesday's 0-0 draw at Atletico Madrid. With his second-placed side five points adrift of leaders Liverpool with only three games left, Mourinho is clearly prioritising next week's Champions League semi-final second leg at home to Atletico over their slim Premier League title hopes. The Portuguese, however, said he would speak to the hierarchy at Chelsea before making a final decision on the team he would field at Anfield on Sunday.

Sherpas leave Everest; some expeditions nix climbs

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) — Dozens of Sherpa guides packed up their tents and left Mount Everest's base camp Wednesday, after the deaths of 16 of their colleagues in an avalanche exposed an undercurrent of resentment by Sherpas over their pay, treatment and benefits.

    Mourinho's cautious Chelsea frustrate Atletico

By Iain Rogers MADRID (Reuters) - Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho returned to Spain with an ultra-cautious approach as his team earned a 0-0 draw with surprise Champions League semi-finalists Atletico Madrid in a first leg lacking in excitement on Tuesday. The stalemate at the Vicente Calderon, which Atletico coach Diego Simeone believes gives Chelsea a slight advantage in next week's return at Stamford Bridge, came at a cost for the 2012 winners, however. Goalkeeper Petr Cech was ruled out for the season after hurting his elbow, captain John Terry limped off with an ankle injury and midfielders Frank Lampard and John Obi Mikel earned bookings that mean they are suspended for the second leg.

Analysis - United must move fast with vital window looming

By Ed Osmond LONDON (Reuters) - Manchester United must move quickly to appoint a new manager and give him maximum time to operate in what will be a critical transfer window for the club. A season of abject failure under David Moyes brought a swift end to the former Everton manager's reign at Old Trafford and United will have to act equally decisively to install the right man to try to revive their fortunes. Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal is the favourite and he has the necessary experience and record of success. Carlo Ancelotti of Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund's Juergen Klopp have also been linked with the job, although the German appeared to rule himself out of contention on Tuesday.

Man United act to halt slide as power shifts back to Liverpool

By Keith Weir LONDON (Reuters) - The balance of power in English football has shifted from one famous U.S.-owned club to another, with Liverpool on course to win the league for the first time in 24 years while rivals Manchester United are in disarray and seeking a new manager. The Glazer family who own United showed their ruthless streak on Tuesday when they sacked manager David Moyes after less than one season in the job. Moyes inherited a Premier League-winning team from Alex Ferguson last year but a dismal campaign means United will miss out on a place in the UEFA Champions League - Europe's top club competition - next season for the first time since 1995. Failing to qualify will cost United upwards of 30 million pounds next year but the Glazers will have been prompted to act by fears of a long barren streak of the kind from which Liverpool are emerging.

Cech, Terry to miss rest of Premier League season

By Iain Rogers MADRID (Reuters) - Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech will miss the rest of the season after landing heavily and injuring his right elbow in Tuesday's 0-0 draw with Atletico Madrid in their Champions League semi-final first leg. Captain John Terry will also be sidelined for the last three Premier League games of the campaign after twisting his ankle in the second half but he could be fit for next month's Champions League final in Lisbon if Chelsea get through. Czech Republic international Cech was replaced by 41-year-old Mark Schwarzer in the 18th minute at the Vicente Calderon after Atletico midfielder Raul Garcia took a tumble and felled the keeper at a corner.
