Ancelotti happy as Real thrive without much from Ronaldo, Bale

By Iain Rogers MADRID (Reuters) - Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti praised his team for beating holders Bayern Munich in Wednesday's Champions League semi-final, first leg without their two biggest names taking a leading role. Cristiano Ronaldo, top scorer in this season's competition, struggled after returning from injury and record signing Gareth Bale only played the final 20 minutes following a bout of flu. Karim Benzema scored the winner in the 19th minute at the Bernabeu, setting Real up nicely ahead of Tuesday's second leg in Munich as they seek a first appearance in the final since they won their ninth European crown in 2002. "Without Bale and with Cristiano at 50 percent it is not easy to play so well," Ancelotti told a news conference.

Chelsea may field weakened team v Liverpool - Mourinho

Chelsea could field a weakened team in their top of the table Premier League game at Liverpool on Sunday, said manager Jose Mourinho after Tuesday's 0-0 draw at Atletico Madrid. With his second-placed side five points adrift of leaders Liverpool with only three games left, Mourinho is clearly prioritising next week's Champions League semi-final second leg at home to Atletico over their slim Premier League title hopes. The Portuguese, however, said he would speak to the hierarchy at Chelsea before making a final decision on the team he would field at Anfield on Sunday.

Chelsea have Champions League advantage, Simeone concedes

Chelsea have the upper hand ahead of next week's Champions League semi-final, second leg after holding Atletico Madrid to a frustrating 0-0 draw in Tuesday's first leg, Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. Through to the last four of Europe's elite club competition for the first time in 40 years, La Liga leaders Atletico dominated the ultra-defensive Premier League club at the Vicente Calderon but failed to find a goal and face a stiff task in the return in London next Wednesday. In the end, he (Mourinho) got a good result. The Portuguese is in the Champions League semi-finals for the fifth year in a row after appearances with Inter Milan in 2010, when they won the title, and Real in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Scholes returns to help Man United interim manager Giggs

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes returned to the club's training ground on Wednesday to help caretaker manager Ryan Giggs prepare for this weekend's Premier League match at home to Norwich City. Giggs, with whom Scholes shared many title triumphs, was put in charge of the first team for the final four games of the season following the sacking of David Moyes on Tuesday. As well as Scholes, Giggs was also joined by Nicky Butt and Phil Neville, who was assistant coach under Moyes, on Wednesday, United said on their website (www.manutd.com).
