City coach Pellegrini defends Kompany choice

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini has no regrets about selecting captain Vincent Kompany to play in last weekend's costly 3-2 loss at Premier League title rivals Liverpool, he said Wednesday. A training-ground injury scare had put Kompany's participation in doubt and although he was ultimately passed fit to play, he produced an uncharacteristically error-strewn performance. The Belgian centre back was partly at fault for Liverpool's first two goals and directly responsible for the …

Podolski double gets Arsenal back into top four

Arsenal striker Lukas Podolski struck twice in a laboured 3-1 win over West Ham United on Tuesday as the FA Cup finalists maintained their push for a Champions League place by moving back into the top four. Germany international Podolski equalised before the break and capped a fine display with the third goal, after Olivier Giroud had put Arsenal in front 10 minutes into the second half, as Arsene Wenger's side worked hard to claim the three points. The result takes Arsenal up a spot to fourth on 67 points with four games left, one place and one point ahead of Everton who have a game in hand against mid-table Crystal Palace on Wednesday as the Champions League qualification race hots up.

Liverpool marks 25th anniversary of Hillsborough disaster

Thousands gathered at Liverpool's Anfield Stadium on Tuesday to mark the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster in which 96 of their fans died during an FA Cup semi-final, one of the darkest days in the history of English football. The supporters lost their lives in a crush at the Leppings Lane End of Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough ground at the start of the match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on April 15, 1989. Over 20,000 people attended the memorial service, where the number 96 was spelled out on the pitch using scarves donated by fans from around the world following an appeal by Kenny Dalglish, Liverpool's manager at the time of the disaster. The names of the 96 victims were read aloud, the youngest being 10-year-old Jon-Paul Gilhooley, the cousin of current Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who attended the ceremony along with his team mates.

Real's Ronaldo to miss Cup final against Barca

Real Madrid top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo will miss Wednesday's King's Cup final against Barcelona after failing to recover from knee and thigh muscle problems, coach Carlo Ancelotti said on Tuesday. The Portugal captain and Ballon d'Or winner has missed Real's last three matches since limping off near the end of the Champions League quarter-final, first leg against Borussia Dortmund on April 2. Ancelotti said on Friday there was a still a chance Ronaldo might recover for the clash at the Mestalla stadium in Valencia but confirmed at a news conference the player was unavailable. "Cristiano Ronaldo is out, we have a lot of players sidelined," said Ancelotti, who will also be without longer-term absentees Jese, Sami Khedira, Alvaro Arbeloa and Marcelo.

Poor first touch costs Liverpool and Henderson dear

(Reuters) - As Liverpool were clinging to a 3-2 lead over title rivals Manchester City in stoppage time at Anfield on Sunday, midfielder Jordan Henderson paid the ultimate penalty for a poor first touch as the home team sought to break clear. The 23-year-old's heavy contact pushed the ball towards Samir Nasri and, desperate to regain control, Henderson's lunge scythed the Frenchman down and left referee Mark Clattenburg with no choice other than to issue a red card for dangerous play. The England international screamed at the heavens as he trudged off the pitch, knowing his part in what Liverpool fans hope will be a run to a first league title for 24 years would be diminished. Although Liverpool saw out the remaining minutes to claim a vital victory to stay two points clear of Chelsea at the top of the table, Henderson is now almost certain to miss three of the final four games of the run in.
