Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor showed admirable commitment to the cause when shrugging off a horror clash in Sunday’s match against Sunderland.

Taylor did superbly well to stop Steven Fletcher from scoring at St James’ Park in the second half of the Tyne-Wear derby.

However, his intervention came at a cost as he collided with the post in sickening fashion.

Things didn't look good as Taylor collapsed to the floor immediately and the other players on the pitch frantically waved for medics to come to his aid.

As our pictures demonstrate, Taylor suffered a nasty cut to his face and he was expected to come off with Mike Williamson starting to warm up for Alan Pardew’s side.

But heroically, Taylor refused to be substituted and after receiving treatment for seven minutes he returned to an ovation from Newcastle fans.

Sadly for Taylor, his effort was all for nothing as Newcastle lost the game 1-0 in injury time.
