GEORGE TOWN, 28 Jan (Bernama) -- Pemain badminton veteran negara Datuk Eddy Choong Ewe Beng meninggal dunia di hospital swasta di sini pukul 3 petang ini.
Choong, 83, bekas juara perseorangan All England sebanyak empat kali sekitar tahun 1950-an dimasukkan ke hospital sejak sebulan lepas.
Anak sulung mendiang, Finn Choong, 53, berkata ayahnya dimasukkan ke hospital itu dua hari lalu selepas mengalami muntah.
"Doktor sudah benarkan ayah pulang hari ini. Bagaimanapun, ayah mengalami komplikasi...Doktor mendapati ada pendarahan di dalam perut," katanya ketika ditemui pemberita di rumahnya di Jalan Bell.
Beliau berkata ayahnya yang sangat mencintai sukan badminton sepatutnya menyaksikan perlawanan All-England di Birmingham pada Mac ini untuk memberi sokongan kepada pasukan negara.
Choong meninggalkan isteri Datin Maggie Choong, empat orang anak lelaki dan
lima cucu.
Sementara itu, Maggie berkata beliau amat terharu melihat kedatangan wakil media.
"Saya terharu mendapati anda masih mengingati mendiang. (Semasa hidup) mendiang cukup bangga dengan anda semua," katanya.
Mayat mendiang dijadual diuruskan di Krematorium Batu Gantung, Jumaat ini pada pukul 2 petang.
